In the power transmission and distribution system, distribution boxes, as core devices for power distribution and protection, have developed into a rich system of categories due to differences in application environment, functional positioning, and technical standards. Scientifically identifying their category characteristics is not only the basis for engineering selection but also a prerequisite for ensuring power safety and system efficiency.

From the perspective of application scenarios, distribution boxes can be divided into three main categories: residential, industrial, and special environment. Civilian distribution boxes are primarily used in residential and commercial buildings, emphasizing simplicity and economy. They are mostly wall-mounted, with 8-24 circuits typically. Their core functions include branch control and leakage protection for lighting, sockets, and small appliances. Industrial distribution boxes serve heavy-duty environments such as factories and workshops, needing to support high-power motors and production lines. They often use floor-standing or cabinet-style structures, possessing higher protection levels (such as IP54 and above) and short-circuit breaking capacity. Some also integrate expansion modules such as soft starters and frequency converters. Special environment distribution boxes are designed for explosion-proof, corrosion-resistant, high-temperature, or humid environments, such as explosion-proof distribution boxes in chemical plants and salt spray-resistant distribution boxes for offshore platforms. Their materials and sealing processes must meet extreme condition requirements.

Based on functional characteristics, distribution boxes can be divided into basic and intelligent types. The basic type uses a mechanical circuit breaker as its core, achieving on/off switching and protection through manual operation. It is suitable for scenarios with stable loads and low maintenance frequency. The intelligent type integrates IoT and sensing technologies, incorporating a smart meter, temperature sensor, and communication module. It can collect data such as current, voltage, and temperature in real time, supporting remote monitoring, fault warning, and load regulation. It is widely used in data centers, smart buildings, and other fields with high energy efficiency management requirements.

Structurally, common types include surface-mounted, recessed, and floor-mounted. Surface-mounted types are directly fixed to the wall, offering convenient installation but taking up space; recessed types are embedded in the wall, offering a strong aesthetic appeal but requiring higher installation precision; floor-mounted types are mostly used in industrial settings, with a base for easy movement and maintenance, and ample internal space to accommodate more functional components. Furthermore, based on voltage level, they can be divided into low-voltage distribution boxes (below AC 1000V) and medium-voltage distribution boxes (1kV-35kV). The latter is mostly used at branch nodes of the distribution network and requires more complex insulation and arc-extinguishing devices.

Different types of distribution boxes have different focuses in terms of technical parameters, protection capabilities, and cost. When selecting a type, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the nature of the load, environmental conditions, operation and maintenance requirements, and future scalability. Only by accurately matching the characteristics of different types can a safe, efficient, and economical power distribution system be built, providing reliable support for the stable operation of various industries.
